AI Tracks Its Own Rebound Effect
Projection: Qualcomm claims higher bandwidth per watt, yet the IEA reports fast growth in AI-focused electricity demand. Efficiency may lower unit cost while stimulating enough use to raise total consumption. The rebound effect must be measured by tracking both energy per useful task and aggregate task volume; either metric alone can mislead.

The IEA reports fast 2025 datacenter electricity growth, rising AI-focused load, and constraints in grids, transformers, turbines, and approvals; Qualcomm announces agentic CPUs, near-memory high-bandwidth compute, disaggregated inference, liquid-cooled racks, and claimed improvements in bandwidth per watt. These are source-backed premises for this inference; they do not by themselves prove broad adoption or the eventual outcome.
