Adaptive Effort Becomes an API
Observed now: Claude Opus 4.8 exposes user effort controls, while Qwen 3.7 exposes hybrid-thinking controls across current Max and Plus tiers. The product opportunity is an explicit effort API with workload evaluations, transparent pricing, latency bounds, and human overrides rather than an unsupported promise of universal accuracy gains.
Why this idea is here
What the evidence establishes.
Anthropic documents user-selectable effort for Claude Opus 4.8; Alibaba Cloud documents per-request thinking controls for current Qwen 3.7 Max and Plus models. These current controls support an effort API without proving broad adoption or universal gains.
